The purpose of this definition is to capture potential emergency department visits related to asthma.
How it works:
The Chief Complaint Discharge Diagnosis (CCDD) parsed field is used to query both the discharge diagnosis codes and chief complaint free text, and exclusions are incorporated as necessary.

To assist state, local, tribal, territorial, and federal public health practitioners in trend monitoring for long COVID (also commonly described as Post-COVID Complications (PCC) or long-haul COVID) related visits in the emergency department (ED) setting using syndromic surveillance data.

Subject matter experts from seven jurisdictions (WA; VA; Harris County, TX; Pierce-Tacoma County, WA; NE; KS; KY) created and validated the definition using ED visit data from January – December 2023.

This is a preliminary Chronic Pain-Related Syndrome, created to search relevant ICD10 and a few key terms in emergency department visits in ESSENCE. The codes and terms are specific to non-cancer related chronic pain with exclusions of cases receiving cancer-related ICD10.
