Smoking

Description

Over 300 independent practices transmit monthly quality reports to a data warehouse using an automated process to summarize patient information into quality measures. All practices have implemented an EHR that captures clinical information to be aggregated for population reporting, and is designed to assist providers by generating point-of-care reminders and simplify ordering and documentation.

Objective

Comparison of automated EHR-derived data with manually abstracted patient information on smoking status and cessation intervention.

Adverse childhood experiences are childhood traumas which influence the developing child and derail healthy developmental processes. The developing child attempt to cope by adopting health risk behaviors such as smoking which has been associated with adverse health outcomes which may not be apparent until many years after exposure.1,2 Research and surveillance on adverse childhood experiences and smoking is a substantially neglected area in Sub Saharan Africa including Nigeria.

Objective

To assess the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Smoking behaviors among urban youths in Oyo State, South Western Nigeria.

Description

Research has indicated several risk and protective factors for arthritis, including cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical activity (1–4). However, it is not well understood how all these factors interact to increase/decrease the risk of arthritis.

Objective

To examine how cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical activity are associated with the risk and severity of arthritis among adults living in Delaware.

Description

Tobacco use is the leading global cause of preventable death, killing more than five million people per year. In addition, exposure to secondhand smoke is estimated to kill an additional 600,000 people globally each year. In 1986, the US Surgeon General’s Report declared secondhand smoke to be a cause of lung cancer in healthy nonsmokers. The first law restricting smoking in public places was enacted in 1973 in Arizona that followed the 1972 Surgeon General’s Report providing awareness of the negative health effects associated with the exposure to air pollution from tobacco smoke. Smoke-free laws were slowly enacted after this time point with most occurring after the year 2000. In July 2007, the Smoke Free Illinois Act (SB0500, Public Act 095-0017) was passed in IL. The ban went into effect on Jan 1, 2008 and Illinois joined 22 other states in prohibiting smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces including offices, theaters, museums, libraries, schools, commercial establishments, retail stores, bars, private clubs, and gaming facilities. While many studies have examined the effect of smoking bans on hospitalizations, this study would be the first to examine the effect of the comprehensive smoking ban in IL on ED visits by utilizing chronic disease categories created with ED chief complaint data captured by syndromic surveillance. The author hypothesizes that the comprehensive smoking ban in IL significantly reduced the ED visits associated with AMI, ACS, stroke, and COPD in adults in Cook County, IL.

Objective:

To utilize ED chief complaint data obtained from syndromic surveillance to quantify the effect of the Illinois smoking ban on acute myocardial infarction (AMI), acute coronary syndrome (ACS), stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) related ED visits in adults in Cook County, IL.

In recent years, individuals have been using social network sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit to discuss health-related topics. These social media platforms consequently became new avenues for research and applications for researchers, for instance disease surveillance. Reddit, in particular, can potentially provide more in-depth contextual insights compared to Twitter, and Reddit members discuss potentially more diverse topics than Facebook members. However, identifying relevant discussions remains a challenge in large datasets like Reddit. Thus, much previous research using Reddit data focused on selected few topically-oriented sub-communities. Although such approach allows for topically focused datasets, a large portion of related data can be missed. In this research, we examine all sub-communities in which members are discussing e-cigarettes in order to determine if investigating these other sub-communities could result in a better smoking surveillance system.

Objective:

We aim to explore how to effectively leverage social media for vaping electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) surveillance. This study examines how members of a social media platform called Reddit utilize topically-oriented sub-communities for e-cigarette discussions.
