Storms - Kansas Department of Health and Environment

This is a cluster of syndromes created to populate an extreme weather myESSENCE tab. The intent was to increase repeatability of our weather surveillance and have something where a user can use the "Change Region" option to select whatever county, or counties, experienced storm activity. This is still a major work-in progress.

All of this as done in NSSP ESSENCE on Emergency Room data. Fields are specified by each syndrome definition.

Naturally, most of these are storm events that Kansas experiences. No hurricane queries, much the same way a lot of states will never need a tornado query.

You might notice the Ice/No Ice above. The ice syndrome picks up a lot of cases and really throws off our ability to see small changes in less-frequent syndromes like "Tornado" or "Flood." For this reason, I choose to provide both versions on each tab. Another query that you might consider including/excluding due to the sheer number of cases is the W30 - Exposure to excessive natural heat.

Other thoughts

Flood - Complaints people hitting their head on the "flood" and people that keep throwning up all "flood"
Ice - So many cases of people icing their injuries. I haven't quite figured out how to exclude these cases
I tried a search for tornado Sirens and Alarms. All true positive cases already mentioned tornados and would be picked up through other syndromes. Furthermore, way too many people hurt themselves trying to turn off their alarm clock. Seriously, don't get a glass bedside table
I tried thunder, really not much there. We didn't have a single case of thunder being used in the syntax we were interested in.
I tried precipitation with no luck there either. A lot of precipitating events for mental health visits
