This syndrome was created to monitor emergency room visits related to opioid abuse in Suburban Cook County, IL. It is adapted from CDC’s Opioid Overdose v2 syndrome, and expanded to include terms for opioid withdrawal, injection site infections, and patients with underlying opiate abuse or dependence disorders, as well as unintentional overdose with opioids. This definition excludes patients who are in remission for opioid abuse/dependence, and does not have inclusionary terms for cases of intentional overdose or suicide attempts with opioids, or use/side effects of clinically indicated prescription opioids. This syndrome definition was developed in ESSENCE (NSSP) and validated using manual review and correlation with hospital discharge data for the year 2017 (r=0.82). The definition is intended to query chief complaint and discharge diagnosis variables in emergency room data.
