Query purpose:
Updated on 10/27/21 to fix processing issue. This query is designed to identify records with diagnostic codes recommended by CDC for e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI), whether or not the record mentions e-cigarette, or vaping, product use. It excludes infectious disease (e.g. upper respiratory infection, influenza, bacterial pneumonia, pertussis, Legionella), asthma, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, suicide, dialysis, diabetes, epilepsy, pregnancy, cancers, vehicle crashes, firearm injuries, heat-related illness, opioid and stimulant use, and other potential etiologies. Because some of the CDC-recommended codes for these lung injuries, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, are fairly broad, and the query does not require evidence of exposure to e-cigarette, or vaping, products, it will return some records that are not related to EVALI. The query is most specific when limited to younger age groups and patients who were not discharged home.
